Release notes

Releases

Every published maXfolders build. Only the latest zip can be downloaded; earlier builds are retired once a new one ships. The current zip is also on the Download page. maXfolders updates through the Mac App Store; maXfolders Pro updates itself.

2.3.0

Latest

A Favourites sidebar for the places you use most, with your own groups and a star beside each path, plus Folder analysis in the right-click menu.

  • New: Favorites sidebar FreemaXfoldersPRO: a compact sidebar at the left of the window keeps your home folder and disks on top, then Applications, Desktop, Documents and Downloads, then the folders you bookmarked before. Show or hide it with the sidebar button before either path field or View → Show Favorites (⌃⌘S). Click a favourite to open it in the Source pane — Back (⌘[) returns you — drag favourites to reorder them, or drag the current folder from the breadcrumb to add it.
  • New: your own groups FreemaXfoldersPRO: + → New Group… gathers favourites under a heading of your own. Click a heading to collapse it, drag headings to reorder them, and Control-click a favourite for Move Up, Move Down and Move To. Deleting a group keeps its favourites.
  • New: a star beside each path FreemaXfoldersPRO: the star between a pane's path field and its Tools button adds that folder to any section or group, or a new one; it's filled while the folder is a favourite, and moves or removes it from there. Removing a favourite never touches the folder.
  • Improved: Folder analysis Apple Intelligence maXfoldersPRO: Clean Folder is now Folder analysis…, in the right-click menu just below Delete… — or Control-click empty space in a pane for the folder it shows. The root of a network share offers Mount analysis….
  • Improved: Disk analysis PRO: in maXfolders Pro, Clean Disk is now Disk analysis… — Control-click the root of a disk such as Macintosh HD.
  • Improved: the bookmark star and list beside the path field make way for the sidebar. Go → Add to Favorites replaces Bookmark Folder, and F12 now puts you in the path field.
  • Improved: every toolbar set, Focused included, has the Hidden Files switch.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro.

2.2.3

Transfer… in the right-click menu, Extract Archive asks where to unpack, a quicker Clean Folder, and tidier drag and drop.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • New: Transfer… FreemaXfoldersPRO: the right-click menu has one Transfer… command in place of Copy and Move to Other Pane. With two panes it asks Copy or Move, as a drag between the panes does; with one pane it asks for a destination folder first.
  • New: Extract Archive asks where FreemaXfoldersPRO: each archive gets a destination, a folder named after it by default, which you can edit or pick with Browse…. Cancel writes nothing, and unpacking into a folder that already has files asks first.
  • Improved: Clean Folder maXfoldersPRO: selecting in the graph stays responsive — clicking a wedge shows its row, or the folder that holds it, in the side list, file details load in the background, and Show in List switches the list when the item isn't in it.
  • Improved: dragged files show their icon and name as a readable blue label instead of a snapshot of the whole row.
  • Fixed: Return and Enter confirm the F5 Copy and F6 Move sheet.
  • Fixed: switching folder tabs while editing the path field keeps the focus in the file list, without opening folder suggestions.
  • Fixed: folder rows a drag passed over, or the target of a cancelled drop, no longer stay highlighted like selected files, and dropping files on the folder they are already in does nothing instead of asking Copy or Move.
  • Fixed: apps, .pages and .rtfd documents and other packages are treated as files — dropping onto one no longer puts files inside it.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro.

2.2.2

See what every transfer changed before you undo it, plus clearer Compare Subfolders results and more reliable transfers.

  • New: Details in Transfers FreemaXfoldersPRO: each job in the Transfers window shows what it changed — “old.txt → new.txt”, the folders a copy or move went between, or a file sent to the Trash. The arrow beside it lists every change of a bigger job, and anything that failed is marked.
  • New: Undo asks first FreemaXfoldersPRO: before Undo reverses a job it lists that job's changes and says what it will do, such as putting files back from the Trash. Tick Always undo without asking to skip the question; the same switch is in Settings → General.
  • Improved: Compare Subfolders Apple Intelligence: What Changed? lists the differences straight from the comparison — folders missing on one side, files on one side only with their sizes, differing files and which side is newer, and moves — and Apple Intelligence adds a sentence or two on what they mean for syncing, so a new file is no longer called “moved”.
  • Fixed: size details say how many more folders were left out than the list shows, cancelling a folder picker during Calculate Full Size stops the rest of the batch, and the picker for a hidden folder such as the Trash opens on it.
  • Fixed: pressing Undo again before the first one finished no longer reverses a job twice, and several copies or uploads running at once no longer risk a crash.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro.

2.2.1

Compare every subfolder of two folders, and let Apple Intelligence explain a log file.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • New: Compare Subfolders Apple Intelligence FreemaXfoldersPRO: View → Compare Subfolders… (⌃⌥Y, or the button in the Compare sheet) reads both folders' whole trees and lists, subfolder by subfolder, what is only in Source, only in Destination, different and identical. A folder missing on one side is one line, files that only moved are spotted, and nothing is copied. With Apple Intelligence (trial or unlock), What Changed? explains the differences in a few sentences.
  • New: Explain Log Apple Intelligence maXfoldersPRO: open a log in Quick Edit, or a huge one in the Large File Viewer, and choose Explain Log…: warnings and errors are grouped by message with how often and when they happened, and a click goes to the first line. Ask “what failed around 14:00?” and Apple Intelligence explains it from those counts; in the Mac App Store app a large log can use Private Cloud Compute.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro.

2.2.0

Ask the documents in a pane, summarise a Preflight report, read Media Info for many files at once, and Apple Intelligence that handles bigger requests.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • New: Ask These Documents Apple Intelligence maXfoldersPRO: ask a question about the PDFs and text files in the current pane, for example “which invoice is from March?”. maXfolders reads dates, amounts and reference numbers from each document itself, answers with the files that match, and opens any of them with a click. Tools → Understand This Folder → Ask These Documents…, or right-click a pane. See Ask These Documents.
  • New: Summarise Preflight issues Apple Intelligence maXfoldersPRO: Summarise Issues in the Preflight window explains what will fail before you copy, grouped by problem — names an exFAT drive can't store, files too large for FAT32 — with why each fails and how to fix it. The counts are maXfolders' own; Apple Intelligence only writes the explanation.
  • New: Media Info for several files FreemaXfoldersPRO: select several videos or audio files and choose Media Info (⌃I) to see them in one table: duration, container, codecs, resolution, frame rate and audio channels. With Apple Intelligence, Summarise Apple Intelligence says what the files have in common and which ones differ.
  • Improved: Apple Intelligence takes on bigger jobs Apple Intelligence maXfolders: where your Mac allows it, Ask This Folder, Sort Into Folders, Clean Folder's advice, Quick Edit's Explain and the new Explain This Scan send large requests to Apple's Private Cloud Compute, so they can read more files and longer text. Smaller requests stay on your Mac. Each feature has its own switch in Settings → Apple Intelligence.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro.

2.1.12

Back and Forward in every pane, a way back from a locked folder, and folder sizes that keep up with the access you give.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • New: Back and Forward FreemaXfoldersPRO: each tab remembers the folders it has shown. Go → Back (⌘[) and Go → Forward (⌘]), the arrows before each pane's path, or your mouse's Back and Forward buttons retrace them, as in Finder. Go → Home Folder (⇧⌘H) opens your home folder. See Folder tabs.
  • Improved: Go Back from a locked folder FreemaXfolders: a folder maXfolders can't open now offers Go Back, so you can return to where you were without typing a path. Grant Access… stays a separate choice.
  • Improved: Folder sizes keep up with access FreemaXfoldersPRO: a protected folder you open in a pane is counted in folder sizes from then on, and sizes refresh as soon as you give access instead of keeping an old —. Each partial or unavailable size has a small triangle: point at it to see why. Size Details… groups what was left out by what you can do about it.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro.

2.1.11

The path bar shows the whole folder path, dragging onto the Shelf works, and a click renames only when the list already has focus.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Improved: The whole folder path FreemaXfoldersPRO: the path bar above each pane shows every folder from the disk down to the one you are in, not only the last name. Click a folder in the path to open it.
  • Fixed: Dragging onto the Shelf FreemaXfoldersPRO: dragging a file or folder from a pane onto the Shelf now adds it. The Shelf used to highlight the drop and then leave the item unstaged.
  • Fixed: Click to rename FreemaXfoldersPRO: a click renames the selected item only when that list already has focus, the same way Finder does. Clicking back into a pane after the Shelf or the other pane selects the row without starting a rename.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro.

2.1.10

Starts in your home folder, opens linked folders in the pane, shows real folder paths and asks for fewer permissions.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • New: Starts in your home folder FreemaXfolders: maXfolders from the Mac App Store opens in your home folder instead of Downloads. Until you allow it, the pane shows a lock with Grant Access…; nothing asks when the app opens. Granting it in one pane unlocks every other pane and tab showing that folder.
  • Improved: Linked folders open in the pane FreemaXfoldersPRO: opening a symbolic link to a folder (double-click, Return or Open) goes into that folder in the same pane instead of handing it to Finder. A link that points to nothing, or back to itself, says so.
  • Improved: Real folder paths FreemaXfolders: Desktop, Downloads, Movies, Music and Pictures always show their real place in your home folder, and the parent folder is your home folder, never the app's private sandbox, which is labelled maXfolders Sandbox if you go there. A saved folder that no longer exists reopens in your home folder, and Go → iCloud Drive finds iCloud Drive.
  • Fixed: Fewer permission questions FreemaXfoldersPRO: opening your home folder no longer asks about Desktop, OneDrive or your photo library. Listings skip the tags and comments of protected folders inside the one you opened, and folder sizes leave the Photos app's own folder out. Your home folder is protected from deletion like the other key folders.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro.

2.1.9

A Tools button beside each pane, the Shelf docked in the main window, Get Media Info for everyone, and folder sizes that say when they couldn't count everything.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • New: Tools menus beside each pane FreemaXfoldersPRO: each pane has a Tools button beside its path that lists the tools for its selection or folder — Inspect & Edit, Organize, Media and Understand This Folder. The menu bar's Tools menu has the same groups, plus Utilities (the nine converters and formatters), and Developer in maXfolders Pro PRO. A tool that needs the trial, the unlock or Pro shows a lock and explains itself. Actions keeps the everyday operations; New Folder and Save File List are in File, Customize Toolbar… in View.
  • New: a Focused toolbar is the default, with just Find and Preview; Settings → General → Toolbar still offers Minimal, Everyday, Remote & Sync, Standard and Power User. FreemaXfoldersPRO
  • New: the Docked Shelf FreemaXfoldersPRO: the Shelf sits on the right of the main window, beside one pane or both, with a tray button on the window's edge; drag its edge to resize it. View → Detach Shelf floats it in its own window and Dock Shelf in Main Window brings it back, with its items. A Shelf you used as a floating window moves into the main window once; a menu bar Shelf stays where it is.
  • Improved: Get Media Info (⌃I) is now in every edition and state, free included. FreemaXfoldersPRO
  • Improved: Folder sizes you can trust FreemaXfoldersPRO: when a folder holds something maXfolders can't count yet — another app's data, or a privacy-protected folder — its size shows as a lower bound such as “12.4 GB+”. A triangle beside the path, or Size Details… in the right-click menu, lists what was left out and lets you grant access. Find, Save File List, Clean Folder, Ask and Explain This Folder say which folders they skipped, and Create Archive names a folder it couldn't read instead of storing it empty.
  • Improved: the button on the window's right edge shows or hides the second pane straight away, with its tabs and folders, like Panes and ⌥⌘2. FreemaXfoldersPRO
  • Improved: Calculate Full Size, counted for real FreemaXfoldersPRO: it reads the folder once, in full, and the size details show the result in place — Counted in full, Still partial or Access not available — without closing. In maXfolders from the Mac App Store, a folder kept out even inside a folder you chose before can be chosen on its own (Choose Folder to Grant Access…) and is remembered. Partial sizes and the warning by the path are easier to see in dark themes and with Increase Contrast.
  • Fixed: maXfolders could quit while opening when its window had last been closed smaller than two panes, or the docked Shelf, need. It now opens at the size they need.
  • Fixed: the item count under each pane no longer counts the .. row, and says “1 item” in every language.
  • Fixed: Bulk Delete, Copy, Move and Convert list their matches in name order, like Bulk Rename; Get Media Info shows a video's bit depth per colour (8 bits, not 24); What Changed? in Compare Folders no longer lists only some of the files when there are more than four; Ask This Folder favours the document the question names.
  • Fixed: switching the Shelf between docked and floating while it was open could leave no Shelf window.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro.

2.1.8

Choose one pane or two the first time you open maXfolders, fewer permission prompts, and unfinished transfers carry on after a restart.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • New: One pane or two FreemaXfoldersPRO: the first time you open maXfolders, it asks whether to start with one pane or two, and says how to switch later. Panes in the toolbar (⌥⌘2) shows or hides the second pane at any time, and every toolbar layout has it.
  • Improved: Fewer permission prompts FreemaXfoldersPRO: folder sizes, Clean Folder and Find no longer look inside other apps’ data in Library → Containers, which made macOS ask whether maXfolders may access data from other apps. Opening those folders yourself still asks. Saved passwords and your purchase or licence are read from the Keychain once per launch, so allowing access once is enough. Folder sizes also leave out Desktop, Documents, Downloads, iCloud Drive, your Photos library and the Music and TV media folders until you have opened them in maXfolders, so showing your home folder no longer asks about each one. In maXfolders from the Mac App Store, Quick Edit and Sort Into Folders no longer ask for Downloads, which the app can already use.
  • Fixed: Transfers that waited FreemaXfoldersPRO: copies and moves that were unfinished when maXfolders quit used to come back paused until you pressed Resume. They now carry on at the next launch, unless you paused them yourself, and the transfers bar counts paused jobs.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro.

2.1.7

Folders macOS keeps apps out of, such as Users and Shared, no longer look empty.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Fixed: Folders that looked empty FreemaXfoldersPRO: in maXfolders from the Mac App Store, macOS keeps the app out of folders such as Users and Shared until you choose them, and they used to look empty. They now show why, with a Grant Access… button: choose the folder once and maXfolders can show it from then on, including after a restart. In both apps, a folder you don’t have permission to read now says so instead of looking empty.
  • Fixed: a few messages, Help paragraphs and Shortcut Guide rows that still showed in English in the other languages are now translated.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro.

2.1.6

maXfolders from the Mac App Store keeps working after the trial, connects to WebDAV, S3 and Dropbox, and the second pane is now optional.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Free to keep using FreemaXfolders: maXfolders from the Mac App Store no longer stops when the trial ends. Browsing, tabs, copy, move and delete, Find, Compare Folders, File Comparator, archives, Preview, the Shelf and the built-in tools stay free. Quick Edit, the bulk operations, Clean Folder, Sort Into Folders, Preflight, Version History, Contact Sheet, Media Show, Apple Intelligence and server connections come back with the one-time unlock, and each one says so when you choose it. Compare lists every feature by state.
  • WebDAV, Amazon S3 and Dropbox in maXfolders maXfoldersPRO: maXfolders from the Mac App Store now connects to a WebDAV server, an Amazon S3 or S3-compatible bucket, or a Dropbox account with Go → Add Cloud Provider…, and browses it like a folder. Copy, move, Sync Browsing, the bulk operations and the Shelf work with it. Included in the trial and with the unlock.
  • One pane or two FreemaXfoldersPRO: a new workspace starts with one pane. Add the second with the button at the right edge of the window or View → Show Second Pane (⌥⌘2), and hide it the same way; its tabs are kept for when you bring it back. If you already use maXfolders, your two panes open as before.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro. The free features after the trial are in maXfolders; maXfolders Pro still needs its licence once the trial ends.

2.1.5

Find and bulk operations leave hidden folders alone, the Base64 decoder reads JWT segments, and a round of fixes.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Improved: Find skips hidden folders FreemaXfoldersPRO: with hidden files off, Find no longer looks inside hidden folders such as .git or .cache, and the same goes for entries inside a zip file. Bulk Rename, Copy, Move and Delete use the same search, so a bulk delete can no longer reach into one. Turn on Show Hidden Files (⇧⌘.), or choose Hidden in Find’s advanced options, to include them.
  • Improved: Base64 decoder reads JWT segments FreemaXfoldersPRO: Decode now accepts URL-safe Base64, with - and _ in place of + and /, and Base64 whose = padding was left off, so a piece of a JSON Web Token decodes instead of reporting invalid input.
  • Fixed: Cron Expression Parser: the list of next runs no longer skips the very next minute.
  • Fixed: JSON Formatter and Text Escape / Unescape: an emoji or other character written as a pair of \u escapes, such as \uD83D\uDE00, is read as one character instead of being refused.
  • Fixed: the address bar’s folder suggestions after a trailing slash list the folder’s subfolders, not the folder itself.
  • Fixed: connecting to an FTP server on a port nothing is listening on now says “Connection refused” at once, instead of waiting without end. maXfoldersPRO
  • Fixed: in maXfolders Pro, 7z archives list every entry with its date when you browse them; only the last entry used to show, with no dates. PRO
  • Fixed: in maXfolders Pro, S3 connections now create folders, work with an endpoint on a custom port, show modified dates instead of blanks, and no longer crash when a bucket is used before connecting. PRO
  • Fixed: in maXfolders Pro, dropping a patch onto a repository pane applies it even when a file it changes was only touched, not edited. PRO
  • Fixed: in maXfolders Pro, text files such as .txt, .md, .log and .csv in a pane showing an earlier Git version open in File Comparator like other text files, instead of “isn’t a text file”. PRO
  • Fixed: clicking the Dock icon brings the app forward even when its windows are only buried behind another app.
  • Improved: trial and licence values are kept in one Keychain item, so a newly installed edition asks for Keychain access once instead of once per value. Existing values are copied forward on first use.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro. The FTP fix is in maXfolders and Pro; the fixes marked PRO are in maXfolders Pro only.

2.1.4

Copy, Cut and Paste files like in Finder, a Minimal toolbar to start with, and a Quick Edit button in Preview.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Copy, Cut and Paste files FreemaXfoldersPRO: ⌘C and ⌘X put the selected files on the clipboard as real files, so Finder, Mail, Slack and Terminal can paste them too. In a pane, files you copied or cut in maXfolders paste at once: a copy stays where it was, a cut moves, and its rows dim until it is pasted. Files copied in Finder or another app still ask Copy or Move, and Move Item Here (⌥⌘V) always moves. Paste into the folder the files already live in, or press ⌘D, to make “report copy.pdf”. Control-click a folder for Paste Into or Move Into, ⌥⌘C copies the paths as text, and ⌘⌫ moves the selection to the Trash. In maXfolders and Pro, FTP, SFTP and cloud rows copy and paste between panes.
  • Improved: Quick Edit from Preview maXfoldersPRO: Preview has a Quick Edit button for text and code files. It closes Preview and opens the file in Quick Edit.
  • Improved: Minimal toolbar FreemaXfoldersPRO: the toolbar now starts with only the essentials: search, go up, go to, new folder, copy, move, delete, the Shelf, preview and help. Settings → General → Toolbar offers fuller sets.
  • Improved: Dialogues open over your window FreemaXfoldersPRO: alerts such as Copy or Move now open centred over the window you are working in, and when an alert is wide, Return presses the highlighted button instead of Cancel.
  • Improved: Wording that matches macOS FreemaXfoldersPRO: French, Spanish, German, Greek, Bulgarian and both Chinese languages now use the words macOS itself uses, such as Trash, Tags and the menu names. In German the Shelf is called Sammelablage.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro. Copying between panes and remote rows is in maXfolders and Pro;

2.1.3

Drag files from a pane onto Finder and choose Copy or Move, and Quick Edit opens in a window of its own.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Improved: Drag to Finder FreemaXfoldersPRO: drop a pane’s files or folders on a Finder window or the desktop and a dialog asks Copy, Move or Cancel. Copy keeps the originals; Move removes them once they have landed. Dropping on another app still copies.
  • Improved: Quick Edit in its own window maXfoldersPRO: Quick Edit now opens in a window of its own, so you can keep several files open at once and keep working in the main window. Clicking the Dock icon brings every editor forward.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro.

2.1.2

Quick Edit becomes a full editor, SFTP comes to maXfolders, and windows you open again come to the front.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • SFTP maXfoldersPRO: Connect to Server (⌘K) now offers SFTP as well as FTP. Sign in with a password or a private key (ed25519 or ECDSA, passphrase-protected keys included), browse the server like a local folder, and drag files between it and a local pane. Host keys are pinned the first time you connect and rejected if they change, and passwords and passphrases stay in the Keychain. Pick the key file with Choose… so macOS lets maXfolders read it again after a relaunch.
  • Colour swatches maXfoldersPRO: Quick Edit draws a small swatch after a colour: #ff8800, rgb(), hsl(), CSS names such as orange, and SwiftUI colours such as Color.orange. Click a swatch, or press ⌥⌘K with the cursor in a colour, to change it with the system colour panel. The text keeps the way the colour was written, and the change is one edit you can undo. Settings → Open & Edit turns the swatches off.
  • Multiple cursors, folding and Go to Symbol maXfoldersPRO: Quick Edit has the editing tools of a code editor. ⌘D selects the word at the cursor and adds the next match each time, ⌥-drag selects a column, ⌥-click adds a cursor, and they all type together. Fold a block from the arrow beside its line number, go to a line with ⌘L and jump to a function, class or heading with ⇧⌘O. The Lines menu sorts, de-duplicates, reverses, trims, joins, wraps and changes the case of the selected lines, each as one edit you can undo.
  • Snippets and decoder maXfoldersPRO: insert a snippet with ⌥⌘J, with blanks to Tab through, and save your own. Decode a JWT, Base64, percent-encoded text, HTML entities, Unicode escapes or hex bytes in place with ⌥⌘U, or inspect a token’s issuer, audience and expiry. Hover a Unix timestamp to see the date in UTC and in your time zone.
  • JSON, YAML and TOML tools maXfoldersPRO: a Data button gives these files a query bar (JSONPath or jq-style paths), Sort Keys and conversion between the three formats, and Preview shows a tree you can fold. Check for Problems now reads YAML and TOML.
  • Hex view Apple Intelligence maXfoldersPRO: see a file’s bytes as offset, hex and ASCII, change a byte by typing over it, search by bytes or text, and see certificates, property lists and PNG images laid out as a tree. Nothing is written until you save, and risky saves are flagged first.
  • Certificate and PEM decoding maXfoldersPRO: open a .pem, .crt, .cer or .der file and choose Preview to see who a certificate is for, who issued it and when it expires, with a valid, expiring or expired badge, alternative names and fingerprints. Decoded on your Mac; private keys are never shown.
  • Secret masking maXfoldersPRO: Quick Edit underlines passwords, API tokens, JSON Web Tokens and private keys, and Copy with Secrets Masked puts the text on the clipboard with each one replaced by [REDACTED].
  • Validate on Save maXfoldersPRO: sudoers, sshd_config, nginx.conf, property lists, launchd jobs, crontabs and systemd units are checked before they are written, and a change that could lock you out asks first.
  • Permissions and owner bar maXfoldersPRO: a bar under the Quick Edit title shows the file’s permissions, owner and group; click it to change them, and the change is applied when you save, with a warning first if it would take away your own access.
  • Save as Administrator PRO : Quick Edit opens and saves /etc/hosts, sudoers and LaunchDaemon plists through the macOS password prompt, checked first, with the old contents kept in a Privileged Backups folder.
  • Improved: Quick Edit in the right-click menu maXfoldersPRO: Control-click a text or code file and Quick Edit… is right there in the menu, no longer inside Open With.
  • Bringing windows forward FreemaXfoldersPRO: choosing a window that is already open, such as Transfers, Preview, Find, Bulk or Help, brings it to the front and restores it if it was minimized. Preview (F3) and other toggle commands still close a window that is already in front.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro. SFTP is in maXfolders and Pro, and Save as Administrator is in Pro only;

2.1.0

Sort Into Folders tidies a messy folder with Apple Intelligence, Quick Edit fixes a text or code file without leaving maXfolders, and you can drop files onto a folder row.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Sort Into Folders Apple Intelligence maXfoldersPRO: Actions → Sort Into Folders… proposes folders for the loose files in a messy folder such as Downloads. The plan is a tree you can edit: rename a folder, drag files between folders, untick what should stay put, add a folder. Nothing moves until you confirm. Apple Intelligence reads only file names, kinds and ages, on your Mac. The whole sort is one step, and Undo puts every file back and removes the folders it made, in every edition. See it.
  • Quick Edit Apple Intelligence maXfoldersPRO: Actions → Quick Edit… (⌥⌘E) opens a small editor over the window for a text or code file. It colors code in 49 languages, previews Markdown, HTML, SVG and CSV files as you type or side by side, shows what changed against the saved file or an earlier version, formats and checks JSON, XML and property lists, shows line numbers and matching brackets, and lets you reopen or save a file with another encoding when accents look garbled. The previous text stays in Version History every time you save. Save a Copy… leaves the original alone. On a Mac with Apple Intelligence you can also proofread and rewrite with Writing Tools, or explain, fix, comment and summarize the selection, with the result shown before anything changes. See it.
  • Improved: drag files from Finder or from the list onto a folder row to copy or move them into that folder. You are asked Copy or Move first, as with any drop.
  • Fixed: in maXfolders Pro, the Git last-change line now shows in the selected row instead of leaving it taller and empty. PRO
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro.

2.0.1

Clean Folder shows what takes the space in a folder and helps you trash it, and the Shelf can now live in your menu bar.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Clean Folder Apple Intelligence maXfoldersPRO: Actions → Clean Folder… draws a sunburst of what takes the space in a folder. Click a wedge to select it, double-click a folder to zoom in, filter by size (Medium+, Large, Very Large or your own limits) and by kind, then Reveal in Finder, Add to Shelf or Move to Trash. On a Mac with Apple Intelligence, describe a filter in words or ask what looks safe to delete; it reads only names, sizes and dates, never what is inside a file. See it.
  • Clean Disk Apple Intelligence PRO: in maXfolders Pro the same window, as Clean Folder or Disk…, also scans a whole disk and lists every mounted volume with its free space.
  • The Shelf in your menu bar FreemaXfoldersPRO: Settings → General → Shelf appears in keeps the Shelf as a floating window or puts it in the menu bar. The icon fills when something is staged, opens the Shelf below it, and takes files you drop on it; the Shelf stays open until you click the icon again, so you can drag more in from Finder. See it.
  • Improved: staged items on the Shelf show their size, can be previewed or moved to the Trash from the Shelf, and ones that have gone missing are marked, with Remove Missing to clear them. Delete All trashes every staged file after asking, and the Shelf opens centred over your window if its saved position is off-screen.
  • Improved: Find can add the selected result, or everything it found, to the Shelf.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro.

2.0

maXfolders and maXfolders Pro are now free for two months, then a one-time purchase on the Mac App Store keeps them, and the same purchase includes maXfolders Pro.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Free for two months, then yours to keep: maXfolders is free to use for two months, and the footer counts the days left. After that, Unlock maXfolders in the app is a one-time purchase through the Mac App Store ($9.99) that keeps it for the current major version. A new major version starts with its own free two months. Settings → License shows what your purchase covers and restores a purchase made on another Mac. How it works.
  • Pro comes with it: maXfolders Pro is free to use for the same two months, and the maXfolders purchase includes a Pro license. In maXfolders choose Get Pro License under Settings → License, then paste it into Settings → License in maXfolders Pro, or choose Open in maXfolders Pro. One license works on up to five of your Macs, and a refund ends it. Get Pro.
  • Improved: the website presents the two apps on their own pages, and the toolbar tour shows which app has each tool in its panel instead of on every icon.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro.

1.7

Finder's Open in maXfolders and Add to Shelf finally reach the app, and the Shelf can send to either pane.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Fixed: the Finder toolbar item and the Open in maXfolders and Add to Shelf commands now open the app. Each app has its own link (maxfolders:// and maxfolderspro://), so they can be installed side by side, and a request opens a new tab in the window you already have instead of a second window.
  • Improved: the Shelf can send to either pane — Copy and Move choose Source or Destination without flipping the active pane, Control-click a pane for Copy Shelf Here or Move Shelf Here, and Actions → Add to Shelf stages the current selection.
  • Improved: the comparison and feature pages show a pill for every state that has each feature: FreemaXfoldersPRO.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both apps: the Mac App Store app and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.76

maXfolders in your language: English (US, UK, Australia, Canada), French, Spanish, German, Greek, Bulgarian, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese, chosen in Settings.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • maXfolders in your language: menus, alerts, Help, the Shortcut Guide, What's New, and the Finder, Share and Quick Look extensions are translated into French, Spanish, German, Greek, Bulgarian, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese, with British, Australian and Canadian spelling where it differs from US English. the new App language setting (Settings → General → Language) chooses one, or follows your Mac's Language & Region, and relaunches the app.
  • Improved: Settings uses a sidebar so the section titles stay readable, and Esc closes the Settings window.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.75

A help button on every window and sheet that opens Help on that feature, and a Help topic of its own for Copy Template.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Help on the window you're in: Find, Bulk, Preflight, Transfers, Preview, Media Show, Version History, Settings, the Shelf and the other feature windows have a round question-mark button in the title bar, and sheets have one in their title row (Git Assistant and Media Info too PRO). Click it to open Help on that feature's own topic — Bulk Rename, Bulk Convert and Copy Template land on their own section. See Help buttons.
  • Improved: Help splits Bulk Operations into Bulk Delete, Bulk Rename, Bulk Copy and Move, Bulk Convert and Transfers, and Copy Template has a topic of its own.
  • Fixed: the X in the main window's title keeps the theme's accent color when you switch windows or relaunch, instead of falling back to the plain title color.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.74

Esc closes every window, and Media Show no longer lets its keys reach the panes behind it.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Fixed: Esc now closes Media Show, Transfers and the Bulk windows, which ignored it. Esc pressed in the main window no longer closes Help.
  • Fixed: with Media Show in front, letters, digits, Backspace and Delete no longer act on the file panes behind it, so its I, 0 and 1 shortcuts work and a stray Delete can't start deleting.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.73

Media Show: flip through a folder's photos, video and audio in a dark window with zoom, file details and a button for the Shelf.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Media Show: choose Actions → Media Show… (⌃⇧M) in any folder, or with some files selected. Pinch or use the zoom control to look closer at a photo, play video and audio, and see each file's details — camera, exposure and location for a photo, format and tracks for a video, with the full Media Info report in maXfolders Pro PRO. One click puts the current item on the Shelf, and another takes it off again.
  • Media Show on a function key: give it any of F1–F12 in the Shortcut Guide; the Media layout PRO has it on F7.
  • Fixed: the maXfolders name in the main window's title bar had become smaller and lighter than the system's title text. It is back to the standard bold size.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.72

Finder colors on the icon and in the Tags column, several colors on one item, and tag changes that show up straight away.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Colors you can see: a file or folder with a Finder color shows it on its icon — up to three colors at once — and the Tags column draws each tag in its own color.
  • Several colors on one item: the swatches in Control-click → Tags add or remove each color on its own, as in Finder, so an item can be red and blue together.
  • Fixed: setting or clearing a color didn't update the row until the folder changed some other way. It now shows at once, with no progress banner and no reload of every tab — and the embedded terminal PRO no longer jumps when a tag changes.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.71

Git Assistant PRO shows any commit or branch beside your folder without checking it out, and tidies commits you haven't pushed yet. maXfolders Pro only — the Mac App Store edition is unchanged.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Any version beside your folder PRO: Show in Destination lists a commit, tag or branch in the other pane, read-only and without checking it out — open a file, compare it with today's, or copy an old one out. Open Beside checks another branch out in a worktree next to your folder.
  • Tidy unpushed commits PRO: Fixup, Reword…, Move Older and Move Newer for commits you haven't pushed, with Undo. Drag a commit out as a patch, drop a patch on a pane to apply it, and restore a lost commit from Branches → Recover.
  • Review before you commit Apple Intelligence PRO: Review has Apple Intelligence comment on the staged diff — a likely bug, a missing test, a change that doesn't match the message.
  • Lines, blame and search PRO: stage, unstage or discard just the lines you select; each line in a diff shows who last changed it; search History with author:, file: and added:. Pull requests show whether their checks pass, a new untracked folder can be ignored in one click, and a folder holding several repositories lists them.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. maXfolders Pro only.

1.6.70

A commit graph in Git Assistant PRO, History that scrolls back to the first commit, a friendlier embedded terminal PRO, and tag colors as one row of swatches.

  • Git Assistant graph PRO: the new Graph tab draws every branch at once — a colored line for each, joining where they merge — with the branch and tag names on the commits they point at.
  • All of History PRO: History and the graph keep loading earlier commits as you scroll, back to the first, without holding the whole history in memory.
  • Embedded terminal PRO: a text-size slider shared by both panes and saved, and Copy for the whole terminal including scrollback. Its colors now follow a switch between dark and light themes. Committing lives in Git Assistant, so the terminal toolbar no longer has Commit All.
  • Tag colors at a glance: Control-click → Tags shows the seven standard colors as one row of swatches; click one to add or remove that tag, and a checkmark shows the colors every selected item already has.
  • The X in the main window's title takes the theme's accent color, so it stays readable on light and dark title bars.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.69

Markdown in Preview, formatted and with working links; Find results saved as a CSV or Markdown list; and Copy Path on the right-click menu.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Markdown preview: Markdown files show formatted in the Preview window — headings, lists and task lists, quotes, code blocks, tables and images stored next to the file. Web and email links open in your browser or mail app, links to other files open them, and #heading links scroll to the heading. Switch to Source to see the Markdown itself.
  • Save Find results as CSV or Markdown: Save List… in the Find window saves what was found into the Source pane's folder, as a CSV (Name, Relative Path, Full Path, Size, Date Modified, Kind) or as Markdown — the search criteria and root folder, then a table linking to every file.
  • Copy Path: Control-click files or folders for Copy Path (Copy N Paths for several, one per line), or empty space in a pane for the path of the folder it shows. Archive entries copy their path through the archive, and items on a server their ftp:// address (sftp:// PRO).
  • Website: a new Markdown preview section and screenshot on the Features page.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.68

Choose what F1–F12 do: pick one of five layouts, or give any key the command you use most.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Function Keys: the Shortcut Guide (F1) now starts with a layout for F1–F12. Classic, the one you know, stays the default; Commander, Navigator, Organizer and Compare & Sync put Find, Compare, tabs, Bulk Rename, the Shelf and more a key away. Or change any single key to one of more than 30 commands, and Restore Default goes back to Classic.
  • Pro function-key layouts PRO: Developer, Media and Remote & Cloud put Git Assistant, the embedded terminal, Media Info, Undo Last Operation and cloud providers on F-keys, and any of those can go on a single key.
  • Improved: the function-key bar at the bottom of the window, the toolbar tips and the Shortcut Guide's own rows — Test Shortcut too — always show the keys as you've set them.
  • Fixed: after Calculate Checksum, the status bar kept saying “Calculating checksums…” once they were all worked out. It now says how many were calculated.
  • Website: new screenshots of folder sizes with size bars, and of the photo, video, audio and checksum columns.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.67

maXfolders Pro's Git Assistant takes on the whole everyday git workflow: pull and push, branches and stashes, single hunks, splitting work into commits, merge conflicts and tagged releases — with Apple Intelligence.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Pull, push and sync PRO: Git Assistant's header shows what's waiting and offers Pull, Push, Sync or Publish, run with your own git in the background. When a remote asks for a password or passphrase, it carries on in the embedded terminal. It fetches when it opens, and after a rebase, squash or amend of a pushed branch it offers a safe Force Push instead of Pull.
  • Git branches, stashes & sync PRO: a new Branches tab with how far ahead and behind each branch is, and which are merged or gone from the remote. Switch and choose whether your uncommitted changes come along or wait on the branch you left. Start a branch from a name or a description — Apple Intelligence can name it from your changes — merge, rebase, rename, delete, Clean Up finished branches, and pop, apply or drop stashes.
  • Split into Commits PRO: a mix of changes becomes focused commits — code with its tests and the docs about it, junk files left out — each with a message Apple Intelligence writes from its own changes, for you to check first.
  • Git merge conflicts PRO: when a merge, rebase, cherry-pick or stash stops, the Resolve tab shows each conflict side by side with Keep Current, Keep Incoming or Keep Both, suggestions where the answer is clear, and Explain Conflict to hear what each side changed. Then Continue, Skip or Abort.
  • Git Tag Release PRO: the next version worked out from the commits, tagged with the release notes, plus a CHANGELOG.md entry, the pushed tag and a GitHub release if you like.
  • Improved PRO: stage, unstage or discard a single hunk; Control-click a file to discard it (new files go to the Trash), stash it or add it to .gitignore; Commit All when nothing is staged; and Undo for discards, commits, merges, rebases, squashes, deleted branches and dropped stashes.
  • Improved PRO: Pull Request can update the branch from main (rebase or merge), squash it into one commit, and create the pull request with GitHub's gh — or open the new pull request page on GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket. History can undo, revert or cherry-pick a commit, or start a branch from it. Ask Git knows ten more requests, like “add debug.log to .gitignore”.
  • Fixed PRO: a commit message Apple Intelligence wrote could run two words together where it left out a number the change doesn't have.
  • Website PRO: new screenshots of every Git Assistant tab, and new sections for Split into Commits, branches and sync, merge conflicts and Tag Release.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Git Assistant needs git (Apple's Command Line Tools or Homebrew's). Apple Silicon and Intel. maXfolders Pro only — the Mac App Store edition is unchanged.

1.6.66

Choose the editor Edit opens your files in — for every file, or per file kind.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Default editor: Settings → Open & Edit sets the app Edit (F4 or ⌃E) opens files in — BBEdit, VS Code, Xcode, whichever you like — instead of relying on the editor macOS registers for each type. A file kind can have its own editor too: Markdown in one app, JSON in another.
  • Edit With…: Control-click a file → Open With → Edit With… opens it in an app you pick, then asks whether to keep it for that file kind, for all files, or just this once. Always Edit With… saves it for that file kind straight away.
  • Improved: the apps saved with Always Open With… are listed in Settings → Open & Edit by file kind, to add or remove.
  • Improved: Edit on a file with no editor asks you to choose one, instead of only saying that none was found.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.65

Folder sizes stay readable over their size bars in every theme.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Fixed: size bars in the Retro, Xcode and Forest themes were drawn so close to the colour of the size over them that a big folder's size could disappear — “5.47 GB” vanished into Retro's green. Each theme's bar is now shaded so the size stays readable, on selected rows too. Native's bars are unchanged.
  • Fixed: switching themes recolours the size bars already on screen straight away.
  • Website: the bulk operations are shown with Apple Intelligence — describe the new names or the conversion and the form fills itself in — with new screenshots of the overview, Bulk Rename, Delete, Copy and Convert, git status, the terminal and every theme.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.64

maXfolders Pro gets a Git Assistant with Apple Intelligence — commit, catch up on what changed and get a branch ready for review — and the right-click menu is shorter and yours to arrange.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Git Assistant PRO: Actions → Git Assistant… (⌥⌘G), or the branch badge on a pane, opens the repository in the Source pane. Stage files and read their diffs; a pre-commit check flags keys and passwords, conflict markers, junk files, big files and leftover debugging with file and line; commit with your own git, so hooks and signing apply, or Commit & Push in the embedded terminal.
  • Commit messages and explanations PRO: Write Message drafts the commit message from what's staged, in the style of the repository's recent commits, and Explain This Commit says in plain words what any commit does.
  • Release notes between versions PRO: What Changed compares the last release tag with now, or any two versions, and writes release notes grouped into New, Improved and Fixed — each line tied to its commits.
  • Pull request advice PRO: the current branch checked against main — size, how far behind, work-in-progress commits, untested code — with a drafted title and description, pointers for the reviewer, and Create Pull Request with GitHub's gh.
  • Ask Git PRO: “undo my last commit but keep the changes” becomes the right git command, explained and marked Safe, Rewrites history or Can lose work. Risky commands are typed into the terminal for you to press Return.
  • A shorter right-click menu: the everyday commands come first — Open, Open With, Preview, Rename, Copy, Move, Add to Shelf, Delete — and the rest are grouped in submenus. Settings → File List → Right-click menu hides any group, or lists them inline instead.
  • Fixed: Control-clicking a folder in the list didn't offer Bulk Copy and Bulk Move.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Git Assistant needs git (Apple's Command Line Tools or Homebrew's). Apple Silicon and Intel. The right-click menu changes ship in both editions; Git Assistant is maXfolders Pro only.

1.6.63

Apple Intelligence reads your files for you: ask a folder a question, see what changed, get the gist of a document, and describe what you want on every form — on your Mac.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Ask This Folder: ask a question of the documents in a folder — “Which contract has the arbitration clause?”, “When does the lease end?” — and get a short answer that names the file and page. Click it and Preview opens at the passage, highlighted. Spotlight finds the documents, so there's nothing to index; Apple Intelligence reads the matching passages on your Mac, scanned PDFs included. Actions → Ask This Folder…, or Control-click a folder. Needs macOS 27.
  • What Changed?: File Comparator turns a comparison into a plain-language changelog — “Prices are now fixed for 18 months instead of 12; the payment schedule moved to Appendix B.” It reads PDFs and Word documents too, so it works on the versions in Version History. Compare Folders gets one as well.
  • Summaries in Preview: a two-line summary above documents, PDFs and code, with the key dates and names in them. Scanned PDFs are read with text recognition first.
  • Explain This Folder: what an unfamiliar folder is, what can be regenerated and where the newest work is — from file names, sizes and dates alone.
  • Describe it on more forms: a describe field on Bulk Convert (“make these web-ready: 2000px long edge, strip GPS, JPEG 80%”), Preflight, Compare Folders and Copy Template, as well as Find and Bulk Rename. Copy Template destinations can use {year}, {month}, {day}, {date} and {project name}.
  • Do… (⇧⌘P): say what you want in one line, and Apple Intelligence opens the right window and fills it in. Nothing runs until you press Run.
  • Settings → Apple Intelligence: turn every Apple Intelligence feature off at once, or each one on its own. They only appear on a Mac with Apple Intelligence (macOS 26 or later, Apple silicon).
  • Fixed: after using the path field, Return and Esc could stop working in other windows until the main window was clicked again.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26; Ask This Folder: macOS 27). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.62

The Items menu is now called Actions.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Items is now Actions: the Items menu is renamed Actions. Open, Edit, Compare Files, Copy and Move, Rename, Delete, Find, the Bulk commands and the rest are all still there, in the same order, with the same shortcuts. Help and the Shortcut Guide use the new name.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.61

Describe what you want and Apple Intelligence fills in Find and Bulk Rename for you to check, on your Mac. maXfolders Pro keeps companion files with their files.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Natural-language Find & Rename: on a Mac with Apple Intelligence (macOS 26 or later), type what you're after — “PDFs from last spring over 5 MB that mention Hilton” — and click Fill In: Find's Named, Containing, size and date fields are filled in, with a line saying what was set. “Date taken, then camera, then a 3-digit counter” becomes Bulk Rename rules, with every new name in the preview. It runs entirely on your Mac and only ever fills in the form — nothing is searched or renamed until you click, and Undo Fill puts the form back. On other Macs the field isn't shown.
  • Insert File Info and Set Name: two new Bulk Rename rules. Put a photo's or video's Date Taken, the date modified or created, the camera, lens or dimensions before, after or instead of the name; or replace the name with your own text for Holiday_001, Holiday_002….
  • Sidecar awareness PRO: copy or move a file with companions beside it — subtitles, XMP sidecars, the other half of a RAW+JPEG pair, a project's asset folder, a checksum — and Preflight lists them, ticked, to take along. Bulk Rename and F2 rename them to match, and Undo puts the whole set back. Settings → Sidecars edits the pairings.
  • Clear Form: Find, every Bulk window and Save File List put every filter back to its default in one click.
  • Find reads PDFs: Search file content now finds words inside PDFs, which it used to miss because a PDF's text is compressed.
  • Counters in name order: Bulk Rename's Sequential Number counts files in the order Finder sorts their names, not the order they were found on disk, and long rule lists scroll so the preview stays in view.
  • Fixed: deleting a Bulk Rename rule could quit the app.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later (Apple Intelligence features: macOS 26). Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.60

What's New shows each release's changes right in the app, the first time you open a new version.

  • What's New: the first time you open a new version, a window lists what changed, sorted into new features, improvements and bug fixes. Every earlier release is in its sidebar, with search. Help → What's New in maXfolders opens it again any time. In the Mac App Store edition it lists only what that edition includes.
  • In-app updates PRO: maXfolders Pro now updates itself. It checks for a new version every day and shows what's new; click Install Update and it downloads the update, checks that it's signed by maxfolders.com, replaces itself and relaunches, keeping your settings and Full Disk Access. File → Check for Updates… and Update available open the same window right away. Added in build 71 of 1.6.60: install this download once by hand, and later versions arrive on their own.
  • Build 71 also adds Help → Visit maxfolders.com and a link to the website in the About window. The Mac App Store edition gets them in its next update.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.59

Contact sheets for photographers, Version History side by side, Paste as File, and size bars in the Size column.

  • Contact Sheet: select photos or videos, or a folder of them, and choose Actions → Make Contact Sheet… for a PDF grid of thumbnails with names, frame numbers, dates and pixel sizes, to send to a client. Page size, orientation, columns and a dark background, with a live preview. RAW files and videos work too.
  • Version History: Actions → Version History… lists the earlier versions macOS auto-saved of a document and opens any of them against the current file in File Comparator, or two against each other. Save a Copy brings an old version back as a new file.
  • Paste as File: ⌘V in a pane saves the clipboard as a file — an image as PNG, a link as .webloc, text as .txt or .md — with its name ready to edit. Files copied in Finder are copied in.
  • Size bars: a soft bar in each Size cell shows the item's share of the folder, like a treemap you don't have to open. View → Show Size Bars turns it off. The Size column can now be dragged wider.
  • Helper windows start closed: after a crash, force quit or logout, macOS no longer reopens Preview, File Comparator, Help, Find, the Tools windows and the rest, empty, at the next launch. Transfers still comes back when jobs are unfinished.
  • Lighter with folder sizes off: turning off View → Calculate Folder Sizes now also stops watching folders for changes, and listing a folder no longer looks up every file's type unless a photo, media or PDF column is showing.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.58

Preview shows what's inside an archive, and maXfolders Pro's Share menu entry is back.

  • Preview: select a zip or tar archive and press F3 to see every file and folder inside it, with sizes and dates, without extracting anything. It used to show only a generic archive icon.
  • Preview lists 7-Zip and RAR archives the same way PRO.
  • Fix: the Share menu's Shelf entry never appeared in maXfolders Pro on current macOS, which refuses to load extensions that aren't sandboxed. It's back now PRO.
  • maXfolders Pro is now maXfolders Pro.app, so it installs next to the free Mac App Store edition (maXfolders.app) instead of replacing it, and the Dock and menu bar say maXfolders Pro. Updating from 1.6.57 or earlier: once the new app is in Applications, move the old Pro copy, maXfolders.app, to the Trash, after checking its window title says maXfolders Pro PRO.
  • maXfolders Pro's extensions now have their own names, such as maXfolders Pro Shelf and maXfolders Pro Finder Sync, so with both editions installed, the Share menu and System Settings no longer list two identical entries PRO.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.57

Folder sizes, and sortable columns for photos, video, audio, PDFs, checksums and how long since you opened something.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Folder sizes: the Size column adds up every folder in the background, with a spinner until it's done, so the list never waits. Sizes stay current as files change inside, and iCloud placeholders are never downloaded to count them. Sort by Size to see where the space went. View → Calculate Folder Sizes turns it off and on.
  • New columns: Date Taken, Camera, Lens, Dimensions and Megapixels for photos; Duration, Codec, Bit Rate and Sample Rate for video and audio; Pages for PDFs; Checksum; and Days Since Opened. Control-click a column header or use View → Columns. Every column sorts, on what's known while the rest fills in.
  • Checksum: Control-click files and choose Calculate Checksum for their SHA-256; Copy Checksum copies it, in shasum format for several files.
  • Days Since Opened: how long since you last opened each item in an app, as macOS records it, to find what to archive. It updates as soon as you open a file from maXfolders.
  • Git: the Git status column now sorts, with changed files first.
  • Fix: AAC audio showed as “aac” in Media Info PRO.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.56

Bulk Convert turns a whole folder of photos, PDFs, video or audio into the format you need, with a dry run first.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Bulk Convert: Control-click a folder and choose Bulk Convert…. Turn iPhone HEIC photos into JPEG, PNG, HEIC or TIFF, resized by long edge, percentage or target file size, with all metadata kept, just the location removed, or everything removed. Merge PDFs in the pane's sort order, split them or rotate them. Remux video into MP4, MOV or M4V without re-encoding, optionally trimmed. Convert audio to AAC, Apple Lossless or WAV.
  • Dry run first: every matching file and its output name is listed before anything is written. Files the conversion can't read are skipped, and anything that would overwrite an original is blocked. Outputs go next to the originals or into another folder with the same subfolders.
  • Resumable: a conversion runs in the Transfers queue, so it can be paused, resumed and picked up after a relaunch. Undo removes what it wrote and brings back any originals it sent to the Trash PRO.
  • Back to the Bulk window: if the Bulk window ends up behind the main window, choosing the same Bulk command again brings it back with its dry run intact, instead of starting over.
  • Help and Shortcut Guide: new Help topics for Tools and Shortcuts.app Automation, and the Shortcut Guide now lists every menu command, including Bulk operations, Copy Template and the Tools menu.
  • Fix: pausing and immediately resuming a transfer could briefly run it twice.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.55

Preflight checks every copy and move against the destination before it starts, so you find out what won't survive the trip first.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Preflight: before a copy or move, maXfolders checks the whole file list against the destination. It shows free space and what's left afterwards, files that already exist, names that differ only in case on exFAT, FAT, NTFS or SMB, names Windows can't open, path lengths measured at the destination (including Windows' 260-character limit), files of 4 GB or more headed for FAT32, tags and extended attributes the destination can't carry, locked, unreadable or in-use files, and symbolic links that loop or point nowhere. A clean check goes straight on; the panel only opens when something needs you. Settings → General can show it every time or turn it off.
  • Normalise names: when uploading to a server, Preflight flags accented names stored in the decomposed form macOS often uses, which Linux and Windows show mangled, and can upload them composed instead.
  • Finder tags survive a copy: copies onto an APFS or Mac OS Extended disk now keep Finder tags, comments and other extended attributes. They were dropped before.
  • Fix: copying a file onto a folder with the same name no longer deletes that folder. The file is skipped instead, whatever the If a file already exists setting.
  • Transfers at launch: if maXfolders quit with transfers unfinished, the Transfers window now opens at launch so you can resume them.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.54

You can now like maXfolders without entering an email.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Like without an email: the heart in the Feedback sheet no longer asks for the email you used to download maXfolders. Leave the field empty and the like counts against this install alone. This fixes Like in the Mac App Store edition, where there is no download email to enter. If you do enter an email, it still has to have a download on record.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.53

The toolbar now shows icons only by default, for a cleaner, more compact window.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Icon-only toolbar by default: on first launch the toolbar shows just its icons, with no text under each button. Hover a button for its name and shortcut. You can still switch to Icon and Text or Text Only: Control-click the toolbar, or choose View → Customize Toolbar…. Existing installs keep their current toolbar style.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.52

Fixes Finder integration (Open in maXfolders, Add to Shelf) not appearing on recent macOS versions, on maXfolders Pro.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Fix: Finder integration missing on recent macOS (maXfolders Pro only — the Mac App Store edition was unaffected): newer macOS versions require every Finder extension to run sandboxed, even ones bundled inside an unsandboxed app. maXfolders Pro's Finder extension wasn't, so macOS silently refused to load it — both Open in maXfolders and Add to Shelf could be entirely missing from Finder's right-click menu and toolbar as a result. The extension is now sandboxed; everything it does (reading your Finder selection, handing off to the main app) works exactly the same as before.
  • Mac App Store: 1.6.52 is also the build submitted to the Mac App Store, bringing the free edition everything from 1.6.48 onward: the Shelf, dragging remote rows onto it, and Add to Shelf from Finder and from remote panes.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel.

1.6.51

Right-click a selection in Finder itself for a new Add to Shelf command, staging it directly without opening maXfolders first.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Add to Shelf from Finder: right-click a selected file or folder in Finder itself — not just inside maXfolders — for a new Add to Shelf command alongside the existing Open in maXfolders one, staging it on the Shelf directly. maXfolders activates and shows the Shelf panel so it's clear the item landed. Note: this — and Open in maXfolders — could fail to appear on recent macOS versions due to a Finder-extension sandboxing issue; see 1.6.52.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro.

1.6.50

A remote pane row can now be dragged straight onto the Shelf, the same as a local one — no need for the context-menu action.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Drag a remote row onto the Shelf: closes the gap 1.6.49 left open — a row from an FTP pane (or, on maXfolders Pro, SFTP/WebDAV/S3/Dropbox/iCloud Photos) can now be dragged directly onto the Shelf panel, staging it exactly like a local drag does. The context-menu Add to Shelf action still works too. See the comparison.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro; which connection types it applies to follows the same Pro/App Store split as everywhere else in the app.

1.6.49

Add to Shelf now works on a remote pane too — plain FTP in both editions, and SFTP, WebDAV, S3, Dropbox, or iCloud Photos on maXfolders Pro.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Add to Shelf from a remote pane: Control-click → Add to Shelf now works on a pane connected to a server, not just a local folder — plain FTP in both editions, and SFTP, WebDAV, S3, Dropbox, or iCloud Photos on maXfolders Pro. Dragging a remote row onto the Shelf isn't supported yet; use the context-menu action. Copy/Move from the Shelf queues a background job for any staged remote item, the same as an ordinary remote Copy/Move, instead of the per-file overwrite prompt local items get. See the comparison.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Add to Shelf itself, and support for plain FTP, ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro; the SFTP/WebDAV/S3/Dropbox/iCloud Photos connections it now also reaches are maXfolders Pro only, same as everywhere else in the app — see the comparison.

1.6.48

The Shelf — a floating panel that stages files from anywhere, then copies or moves them all at once — plus Danger-Zone Guards against accidental Delete/Move, three new Finder/Share/Quick Look extensions, in-app archive preview, and dragging files straight out of a pane. Free in both editions.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • The Shelf: a floating panel (toolbar button, ⌃J, or Control-click → Add to Shelf) that collects files dragged in from either pane, from Finder, or from another app's Share menu (Send to maXfolders Shelf) — then Copy or Move sends everything staged into the active pane's current folder in one go, with that destination shown right on the panel. It stays on top even when maXfolders isn't frontmost, follows your color theme, and reopens automatically if it was still open when you quit. See the Shelf on the Features page.
  • Danger-Zone Guards: Delete and Move are now blocked outright against your home folder, core system directories, and the root of a network-mounted share — no override. Mark your own additional protected folders in Settings → Danger Zone, removable there when you actually need to touch one. A bulk operation affecting 500 or more items also gets an extra confirmation before it runs.
  • Finder Sync, Share & Quick Look extensions: Open in maXfolders from Finder's own toolbar and right-click menu; Send to maXfolders Shelf from any app's Share menu; and a Quick Look extension that renders a zip archive's contents right in Finder when you press Space on it.
  • The in-app Preview window now shows zip archives too, using the same Quick Look mechanism as the new Finder extension — previously archives were skipped entirely.
  • A pane's selection can now be dragged out — onto the other pane, the Shelf, Finder, or another app — not just dropped onto.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Every feature in this release ships in both the Mac App Store edition and maXfolders Pro; see the comparison.

1.6.47

iCloud Drive support, iCloud Photos PRO as a new Pro cloud provider, and Bulk Copy/Move alongside the existing Bulk Delete/Rename — plus a fix so closing the main window no longer strands you with no way back but a relaunch.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • iCloud Drive (both editions): Go → iCloud Drive jumps straight to the same folder Finder's sidebar shows. A file iCloud hasn't downloaded yet still lists normally — Control-click it (or a folder containing one) for Download Now to fetch it in the background.
  • iCloud Photos, maXfolders Pro only: a new cloud provider under Add Cloud Provider… that needs no credentials — connect and macOS asks to allow read/export access to your Mac's Photos library (which mirrors iCloud Photos when that's turned on). Browse albums or All Photos, and copy, move, or delete with rule-based Bulk criteria (album, media type, favorites, screenshots, date, size). A Bulk Move exports first and removes the originals in one batched Photos-library change, so you see one system confirmation for the whole job instead of one per photo. See the comparison.
  • Bulk Copy… and Bulk Move… join the existing Bulk Delete/Rename window (Control-click a folder) — full Find-style filters for local folders, name wildcards for FTP and, on Pro, SFTP/S3/WebDAV/Dropbox PRO. Runs through the same pausable, resumable queue as a plain copy or move.
  • Fixed: closing the main window left no way to get it back short of quitting and relaunching. The window now comes back when you click the Dock icon.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. This is maXfolders Pro, not the Mac App Store edition; see the comparison.

1.6.46

Get Media Info shows a video or audio file's technical details — container, duration, and per-track codec, resolution, frame rate, sample rate, and channels — with Copy, Text, JSON, and XML export. maXfolders Pro.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Get Media Info (⌃I, Actions → Get Media Info…, or right-click a video/audio file) opens a window with that file's General/Video/Audio/Text technical details — container format and duration, then per-track codec, resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate, bit rate, sample rate, channels, and bit depth. Copy, Text, JSON, and XML export the report. maXfolders Pro only — see the comparison.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. This is maXfolders Pro, not the Mac App Store edition; see the comparison.

1.6.45

maXfolders Pro is now fully notarized by Apple, on top of the Developer ID signing that shipped in 1.6.44 — the first-launch security warning is gone for good.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • maXfolders Pro is now notarized by Apple, completing the signing work that started in 1.6.44. Downloading and opening it no longer shows any Gatekeeper warning — a normal double-click works immediately.
  • No feature or behavior changes since 1.6.43.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. This is maXfolders Pro, not the Mac App Store edition; see the comparison.

1.6.44

maXfolders Pro is now built and signed with a real Apple Developer ID certificate instead of an ad hoc signature — a step toward full notarization. No functional changes.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • maXfolders Pro direct-download builds are now signed with a real Apple Developer ID Application certificate under a paid Apple Developer Program account, replacing the previous ad hoc signature.
  • This is groundwork for full notarization, which shipped next in 1.6.45.
  • No feature or behavior changes since 1.6.43.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. This is maXfolders Pro, not the Mac App Store edition; see the comparison.

1.6.43

maXfolders now ships in two editions — a new, free edition on the Mac App Store, and maXfolders Pro (this download), unchanged and still free during the beta.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • maXfolders now ships in two editions: a new, free maXfolders on the Mac App Store — sandboxed, for local file management — and maXfolders Pro, this download, with everything else: the embedded terminal, Finder integration, SFTP, and WebDAV/S3/Dropbox cloud providers.
  • A new Compare page lays out exactly what's in each edition. FTP, dual panes, compare, Find, archives, Preview, themes, and the Tools utilities are free either way.
  • The in-app Help and Shortcut Guide were updated to match. This Pro build itself is unchanged from 1.6.42 — same identity, same settings, same Full Disk Access flow.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. This is maXfolders Pro, not the Mac App Store edition; see the comparison.

1.6.42

maXfolders — the rename from MacFolders is complete, and the Tools menu gains a JSON Formatter and Image to Text (OCR).

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • The app is now called maXfolders, with a new icon and bundle identity throughout. Existing installs carry their settings and Keychain items forward automatically the first time you open it.
  • The Dev Tools menu is renamed to Tools, and gains two new utilities: JSON Formatter (pretty-print, minify, or repair malformed JSON with a Fix JSON pass) and Image to Text (OCR), which pulls editable text out of an image using Apple's on-device Vision framework. Nine tools in total now.
  • The website's screenshots are refreshed to show the current branding.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.41

The download form now limits new downloads to 5 per day per email address or IP address, to curb abuse.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • The download form on macfolders.com now limits new downloads to 5 per day per email address or IP address.
  • If you hit the daily limit, the form shows a message asking you to try again the next day, instead of failing silently.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.40

Adds a Dev Tools menu with seven built-in developer utilities — Base64, URL, and HTML encode/decode, an XML formatter, text escaping, QR codes, and a cron parser.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • New Dev Tools menu (between Go and Window) with seven small, self-contained utility windows: Base64 Encoder/Decoder, URL Encoder/Decoder, HTML Text Encoder/Decoder, XML Formatter, Text Escape/Unescape (string-literal or HTML-entity), QR Code Encoder/Decoder (generate from text, or decode by dropping, browsing, or pasting an image), and a Cron Expression Parser (plain-English description plus the next 5 run times).
  • Each Dev Tools window follows the app's native look and respects your chosen theme.
  • The Features page gets a new Dev Tools section with screenshots of all seven tools; the home page highlights them too.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.39

Adds Templated Copy: copy a selection while skipping files and folders you exclude, by exact name or wildcard pattern, with a saved reusable template and a dry-run preview.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • New Copy Template… command (Actions menu, and each pane's context menu) copies a selection while excluding files/folders you name — by exact name (e.g. .git) or wildcard pattern (e.g. *.log; *.tmp).
  • Exclusion rules are saved as named, reusable templates, managed from the Copy Template window, so you can reuse the same rules across copies.
  • Dry Run previews exactly what will be copied versus excluded — including inside ZIP/TAR archives — before you apply it. Applying enqueues the same persisted, pausable/resumable copy job as a plain copy.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.38

The Feedback sheet now closes automatically once a Like goes through, and the API returns clean errors instead of a raw crash page if the database is briefly unreachable.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Liking MacFolders now closes the Feedback sheet as soon as the like is confirmed, instead of leaving it open.
  • The Like and Feedback endpoints on macfolders.com now return a clean error instead of an unhandled crash page if the database is briefly unreachable while checking your email.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.37

Remembers the email you use for Feedback and Like, and hardens the Like count endpoint against a database error.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • The Feedback sheet now remembers the email you last used for a bug report, feature request, or Like, and fills it back in automatically the next time you open it.
  • The Like count endpoint on macfolders.com now fails safe instead of returning an unhandled error page if the database is briefly unreachable.
  • The site's download form (used whenever you get a new version or update) now remembers the email you enter and fills it back in on future downloads too.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.36

Adds a Like button next to Feedback for a quick way to show some love for the app.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • The Feedback sheet gains a heart-shaped Like button, gated on the same registered email as a bug report or feature request. Tap it as many times as you like — repeat taps are batched into a single request, and a running total is shown beside it.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.35

Fuller Cloud Providers coverage on the Features page, plus small nav and analytics tweaks.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • The Features page's Cloud Providers section now covers WebDAV, S3 (and S3-compatible services like MinIO, Backblaze B2, and DigitalOcean Spaces) PRO, and Dropbox in the same depth as the FTP/SFTP section, with its own entry in the on-page jump menu.
  • Renames the site's nav toggle to "Go to" and the "Product" link to "Overview".
  • Adds GA4 download tracking to the site's download button, which is a form submit and wasn't picked up by GA4's automatic link tracking.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.34

Fixes the Install page's download fallback callout showing up on every visit instead of only after a real download.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Fixes the /Install page's "Download not started yet?" callout appearing on every visit — including a direct visit from the nav link, where it made no sense — instead of only when you actually landed there from a download. The download-form redirect now tags the URL so the callout only shows when it's relevant.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.33

Fixes the download form occasionally not starting a download on the first attempt, and highlights the in-app Feedback button.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Fixes the download form on macfolders.com sometimes not starting a download on the first attempt (only working on a retry): a slow server response could lose a race with the page's redirect to the Install page, aborting the file mid-flight. The Install page also gains a fallback link to get the release again if a download still doesn't start.
  • The in-app Feedback button now highlights in the app's accent color, with a new BETA tag beside it in the status bar.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.32

Adds an in-app Feedback button for reporting bugs and requesting features.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Adds a Feedback button to the bottom status bar for sending a bug report or feature request straight from the app.
  • On macfolders.com, the Releases and Download pages no longer get cached by the browser, so they always show the newest release right after it ships.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.31

Fixes FTP folders showing empty when connected to Windows' built-in FTP server (Microsoft FTP Service / IIS FTP).

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Fixes FTP directory listings appearing completely empty when connected to a server that sends MS-DOS-style listings instead of the Unix ls -l style MacFolders previously assumed — most notably Windows' built-in FTP server (Microsoft FTP Service / IIS FTP). Both listing formats are now recognized automatically.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.30

Adds Bulk Delete and Bulk Rename with a dry-run preview across local, FTP/SFTP PRO, and cloud connections, and auto-opens the Transfers window when a remote transfer starts.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Bulk Delete and Bulk Rename: right-click a folder to open a new window that walks its whole tree and previews every matching file before anything runs. Local folders get full Find-style filters (name, size, date, attributes, content search); FTP, SFTP, S3, WebDAV, and Dropbox PRO get simple name wildcards. Rename combines find/replace, case conversion, prefix/suffix, sequential numbering, and extension rules with a live preview and conflict warnings. Both run through the same queue as copy/move, so they can pause, resume, and survive an app relaunch mid-run.
  • Fixes deleting a non-empty folder over FTP or SFTP PRO, which previously failed because those protocols require an empty directory before they'll remove it.
  • FTP, SFTP PRO, and cloud connections now auto-open the Transfers window the instant a job starts sending or receiving bytes, and it can be shown or hidden with a new Control-T shortcut.
  • SFTP PRO connections now show a command log like every other protocol — a pseudo-command per operation (CONNECT, LIST, MKD, RMD, DELE, RENAME, RETR/STOR, DISCONNECT), since SFTP has no plaintext wire protocol to tap directly.
  • Fixes the embedded terminal PRO ignoring the Native theme's Light/Dark override, staying dark even with the app set to Light while macOS itself was in Dark mode.
  • On macfolders.com, the Install page gets a screenshot of macOS's Gatekeeper "Open Anyway" confirmation dialog.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.29

Fixes Escape not closing Preview, a relaunch bug that could leave the wrong remote tab selected, and gives the embedded terminal PRO its own spotlight on the website.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Fixes Escape not closing the Preview window — every other popup window already closed on Escape; Preview was the one exception.
  • Fixes relaunching with multiple saved remote tabs sometimes leaving the wrong tab selected, which also silently kept that tab from reconnecting (only the selected tab's view triggers reconnect-on-focus).
  • Fixes the Permissions… menu item staying enabled with nothing selected, matching every other action in the Actions menu.
  • On macfolders.com, the embedded terminal PRO — which follows the pane's folder as you navigate — gets its own dedicated section on the home page and Features page.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.28

Makes the Connections window resizable, highlights the bookmark icon while its list is open, and adds an Install page for macOS's unidentified-developer warning.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • The Connections window (FTP/SFTP PRO and cloud provider list) can now be resized taller, so it's easier to see many saved connections at once.
  • The bookmark icon next to the path field now highlights while its bookmark list is open.
  • Adds an Install page with the three steps for opening MacFolders past macOS's unidentified-developer warning; the download form now redirects there after you submit it.
  • Fixes a website crash (500.30) caused by concurrent app-pool restarts racing to migrate the database at the same time.
  • Refreshes the screenshots throughout macfolders.com and adds Retro and Xcode theme captures to the home page.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.27

Extends Sync Browsing to remote and cloud folders, and adds line numbers to the Large File Viewer.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Sync Browsing now works with remote and cloud folders too — pair a local folder with its SFTP PRO/FTP/S3/WebDAV/Dropbox backup, or two remote trees, and it mirrors navigation the same way, confirming the target folder exists on the remote side with a live directory listing.
  • The Large File Viewer now shows line numbers alongside the text; long lines scroll horizontally instead of wrapping, so the numbers stay aligned with their lines.
  • On macfolders.com, fixes an intermittent form-submission error after the site restarts, by persisting Data Protection keys to disk instead of relying on IIS's per-app-pool key loading.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.26

Adds a Large File Viewer for oversized text files, and Finder comments PRO in the file list.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Large File Viewer: Preview's text fallback no longer silently truncates large files at 20,000 characters. Files over 5MB now show a banner offering to open a new Large File Viewer window instead, which streams the file in bounded-memory pages rather than loading it whole — with paged navigation, jump-to-line, and find-in-file that stay fast regardless of size. Reach it from Preview's banner or toolbar button, or a file's context menu.
  • Right-click one or more files or folders and choose Comment to set or clear their Finder comment, and a new Comments column PRO shows it in the file list — mirrors the existing Tags feature.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.25

Adds Shortcuts.app automation support, checksum-verified cloud transfers, and a beta launch discount.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Shortcuts.app support: Copy Files, Move Files, Create Archive, Extract Archive, and Find Files are now available as Shortcuts.app actions, so MacFolders can be chained into your own automations.
  • Uploads and downloads to S3, Dropbox, and WebDAV PRO are now checksum-verified after each transfer, catching silent corruption instead of trusting a completed transfer unconditionally; a new Verify checksums after transfer setting (default on) controls this per connection.
  • The embedded terminal PRO now follows the pane as you navigate to a new folder, instead of staying pointed at wherever it launched.
  • Sync Browsing now also requires both panes' current folders to share a name before it can turn on, and turns itself off if the mirrored subpath doesn't exist on the other side.
  • On macfolders.com, a new beta discount offer locks in 80% off MacFolders Pro for life for anyone who downloaded during the beta with a valid email.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.24

Adds Sync Browsing, mirroring navigation between the two panes for comparing parallel project or backup folders.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Sync Browsing (View menu, toolbar, or ⌃⇧Y), enabled once both panes' current folders share a name, pins each as a root and keeps both at the same relative subpath as you navigate either one — turns itself off if a pane reaches a subpath the other side doesn't have, moves outside its root, switches tabs, or the synced tab closes.
  • The font size toolbar group (Bigger/Smaller) no longer ships in the default toolbar; add it back via toolbar customization if you use it.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.23

Adds a Retro theme, and merges the FTP/SFTP PRO and Cloud Provider toolbar groups and manager screens into one.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • A new Retro theme puts bright green-phosphor text on near-black backgrounds, for a vintage 80s terminal look.
  • The separate FTP/SFTP PRO and Cloud Provider toolbar groups and manager screens are now one Connections group and one Connections sheet, freeing up toolbar space.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.22

Adds a persistent transfer queue — copy, move, and delete jobs survive a relaunch, can be paused, reordered, and retried, and resume mid-file instead of starting over.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • A new Transfers window (replacing Failed Transfers) lists every copy, move, and delete as a queued job — pause, resume, cancel, retry, or drag to reorder any of them, or pause/resume the whole queue at once. Jobs persist across a relaunch and come back paused, so nothing runs until you say so.
  • A dropped SFTP PRO/FTP/S3/Dropbox/WebDAV connection now pauses the affected job instead of failing files one by one, and resumes automatically once the network is back; retries use exponential backoff instead of a fixed delay.
  • Interrupted SFTP PRO, FTP, S3, and Dropbox transfers resume from where they left off instead of restarting — including large S3 uploads, which now use multipart upload. WebDAV downloads resume the same way; WebDAV uploads still restart (no resume standard for it).
  • Fixes the embedded terminal PRO's Clear button not clearing the visible screen, and the git panel's Commit All button not opening its popover.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.21

Adds cloud provider connections — WebDAV, S3, and Dropbox PRO — that browse like a local folder alongside FTP/SFTP.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Add Cloud Provider… (Go menu, or the network icon on a pane header) connects to a WebDAV, S3, or Dropbox PRO account and browses it like a local folder — drag files to upload or download, or rename, delete, and create folders remotely. Manage Cloud Providers… lists saved connections to reconnect, edit, or delete.
  • Dropbox PRO connects with a personal access token generated in the Dropbox App Console rather than a full sign-in — see the new Dropbox walkthrough in Docs for step-by-step setup.
  • WebDAV PRO connects with a server URL, username, and password; S3 (and S3-compatible services like MinIO, Backblaze B2, and DigitalOcean Spaces) connects with an access key, bucket, and region. All cloud credentials are stored in the macOS Keychain, never written to settings.json in plain text.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.20

Saved FTP/SFTP PRO connections join the pane bookmark list, and file lists gain a real Finder Get Info command.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • The bookmark list under a path field now also lists your saved FTP/SFTP PRO connections, right after the folder bookmarks — click one to connect and open it in a new tab in that pane.
  • Right-click one or more files or folders and choose Get Info PRO to open the real Finder Get Info window for them, the same window Finder itself shows. Disabled inside archives and on remote (FTP/SFTP) panes, since it needs a real file on disk.
  • On macfolders.com, the Docs page's Help and Shortcuts sections drop their icons for a plain bulleted list (Overview keeps its icons), and 11 toolbar symbol images that were rendering upside-down across the site are fixed.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.19

Finder tags come to the file list, and a new Settings window (⌘,) gathers appearance, file list, and window preferences with reset buttons.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • File lists gain a Tags column showing each item's Finder tags as colored dots and names, off by default like Kind and Permissions. Right-click one or more items for a Tags submenu: toggle any of the 7 standard colors, or an existing custom tag, across the whole selection at once — checked when every selected item already has it, same as Finder — plus Add Tag… for a custom name and Remove All Tags. Disabled inside archives and on remote (FTP/SFTP PRO) panes, since tags are a local-disk feature.
  • A new Settings window (⌘,) gathers General, File List, and Windows preferences into one place, each tab with its own Reset to Defaults button, plus one button to reset everything at once. Bookmarks, saved connections, and open tabs are left alone by every reset.
  • The Preview window gains a remember window position toggle in Settings; turned off, it always opens centered over the main window instead of at its last saved spot.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.18

Fixes FTP transfers freezing when Cancel is tapped mid-stall, adds automatic retry and a Failed Transfers window for files that can't be written, and adds an Xcode dark theme.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Cancelling an FTP upload or download no longer freezes the app if the server stops responding mid-transfer (e.g. writing to a locked file) — the stuck connection is now torn down immediately instead of waiting on a server that may never reply.
  • A file that fails during a remote copy or move (locked, permission denied, etc.) is retried a few times, then skipped instead of aborting the whole batch. Skipped files land in a new Failed Transfers window (View → Show Failed Transfers) with a Retry button per file and Retry All — a file that succeeds on retry disappears from the list on its own.
  • Adds an Xcode dark color theme, lifted from Apple's own Default (Dark) Xcode colors.
  • Fixes an upside-down parent-folder icon on the Features and Docs pages of macfolders.com.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.17

Fills in file permissions for FTP/SFTP PRO listings, retries a dropped remote connection once before giving up, and adds an interactive toolbar tour to the Features page.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • FTP and SFTP PRO file listings now populate the Permissions column — FTP parses the rwxr-xr-x field from LIST output, and SFTP forwards the mode bits it already receives.
  • A dropped FTP/SFTP PRO connection (idle timeout, network blip) is now retried once with a forced reconnect before a listing fails, so Refresh on a disconnected remote pane reconnects instead of surfacing a stale error.
  • Clicking the FTP command log — header, text, or its toolbar — now makes that pane the Source, matching the embedded terminal PRO.
  • On macfolders.com, the Features page gains an interactive action bar tour: every toolbar icon is clickable and opens a panel describing what it does.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.16

Adds a live FTP command/response log below the file list, and remote tabs now reconnect lazily when you actually switch to them.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • The toolbar button that shows the embedded terminal PRO now also shows a live FTP command/response log below the file list on a remote FTP tab: every command sent and reply received on the control channel appears as it happens, with Clear, Copy All, and find-in-text/font-size controls, and it stays scrolled to the latest line as new output arrives.
  • Restoring FTP/SFTP PRO tabs from the last session now reconnects lazily — a remote tab connects only when it actually gets focus, instead of every saved connection opening over the network before the UI even draws. A tab that fails to connect stays visible with a Retry button instead of disappearing.
  • FTP protocol errors now name the exact command and transfer mode that failed, making server-specific quirks easier to diagnose.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.15

Fixes FTP transfers reporting an error right after they finish, and gives long git branch names better handling in the toolbar.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Fixes FTP uploads and downloads reporting an error right at the end of the transfer, even though the file had already moved: the client was closing the data connection before the server's completion reply arrived, and one failure path could silently retry the whole transfer over active mode on a connection that was no longer in sync.
  • Clicking into the embedded terminal PRO now focuses that pane too (border highlight, keyboard shortcuts), instead of leaving focus on whichever pane was active before.
  • Long git branch names in the toolbar badge are now truncated so they don't crowd out the path field; hover to see the full name.
  • On macfolders.com, the mobile menu now scrolls if it's taller than the screen and closes itself after you tap a link, and the Features/Docs sidebar switches to a horizontal row on narrower screens instead of a fixed column.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.14

The toolbar gains a dedicated FTP group, and Hidden Files becomes a switch in the main group.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • The toolbar gains a dedicated FTP group — New Connection and Manage Connections — right after the folder actions group, so starting or managing a remote connection no longer needs the Go menu.
  • Hidden Files moves out of the View group and becomes a switch in the main toolbar group, right after Refresh.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.13

File lists gain a Permissions column, and a Permissions… command to change a file or folder's Unix permissions.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • File lists gain a Permissions column showing each file or folder's Unix permissions (e.g. rwxr-xr-x), on by default at the end of the columns.
  • Right-click one or more files or folders and choose Permissions… to change them: tick owner/group/other read, write, and execute boxes, or type an octal mode directly, with an Apply to enclosed items option to recurse into a selected folder.
  • The Git status column is renamed Git and made narrower, since it only ever shows a single letter.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.12

The path field predicts local folders as you type, and bookmarks move to their own icon and an F12 shortcut.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Typing a local path in a pane's address bar now shows matching subfolders below it, with the top match highlighted — Return fills in the highlighted match, navigates the pane there, and keeps predicting that folder's own subfolders, so you can keep drilling in without leaving the keyboard.
  • Bookmarks move to an explicit trigger: a new bookmark icon just before the path field, or F12 (new), ⌘L, or ⌃L for the Source pane. They no longer open just from clicking into the field, so they never compete with a path you're typing.
  • The bottom function-key bar gains F12 Bookmarks, alongside the existing F1–F11 row.
  • Folder listings used for prediction are cached per folder for the session, so retyping or backing up to an already-visited folder doesn't re-read it from disk.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.11

The embedded terminal PRO gains a small toolbar: Clear Terminal, and git actions inside a working tree.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • A small toolbar above the embedded terminal PRO always offers Clear Terminal. Inside a git working tree it also offers Git Status, Fetch, Pull, Push, and Commit All… (opens a small popover for a commit message, then stages every change and commits it).
  • These git actions run as real shell commands in the pane's own terminal, using your actual git config, SSH keys/credentials, and hooks — their output is visible like any other command, and the existing branch badge/status column pick up the results automatically.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.10

Search in Files can now look inside .zip and .tar archives, and the path bar shows when you're browsing inside one.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Search in Files gains a Search inside archives (zip, tar) option: turn it on and matching files inside any archive found during the search show up right alongside regular files — by name, or by their contents too when Search file content is on. Go to Source, Open, and Edit all work on these results just like normal files.
  • The path bar now shows an archive icon next to the pane badge whenever you're browsing inside a zip or tar file, so it's clear at a glance.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.9

Fixes an FTP directory-listing failure on servers that reject the LIST -a flag.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • FTP browsing sent LIST -a unconditionally (since 1.6.7), but some servers — Microsoft/IIS FTP and other strict implementations — reject that flag with "Syntax error in parameters or arguments." The transfer itself succeeded; only the listing refresh right after failed. MacFolders now falls back to a plain LIST when a server rejects the flag.
  • The in-app Docs page is reorganized with clearer subheadings within each topic, for easier scanning.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.8

MacFolders now shows git status: a branch badge, a Git Status column, and a diff view in Preview.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • A folder that's a git working tree shows its current branch as a badge next to the path field, and a new Git Status column (Control-click a column header, or View → Columns) shows each file's staged/modified state.
  • Preview gains a Show Diff toggle for a file with a git status: it shows what changed since the last commit instead of the plain file.
  • The branch badge, Git Status column, and diff stay live — switching branches or staging changes updates them without a manual reload.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.7

FTP directory listings now include dot-folders like .well-known, and the two View menus are merged into one.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • FTP browsing now sends LIST -a instead of a bare LIST, so servers include dot-folders such as .well-known in the listing. They were previously left out by the server itself, before the app's Show Hidden Files setting ever got a chance to filter them.
  • The two separate View menus — one of them holding only Enter Full Screen — are merged into a single View menu.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.6

Appearance and Theme are now one Theme menu, and a new Commander theme joins the color themes.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • The Appearance and Theme menus are combined into a single Theme menu.
  • A new Commander theme, inspired by Norton Commander: a deep blue background with bright yellow text and cyan accents.
  • Fixed the Source pane badge text being unreadable on bright accent themes (like Commander's yellow); it now picks black or white based on the accent color.
  • The bookmark dropdown under a path field now follows the selected theme instead of always using plain system colors.
  • Go → Show Embedded Terminal PRO also has an F11 shortcut, and the status bar now shows the running app version.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.5

Fixes the update check, which was silently failing because the version file it reads was missing from the live site.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • The background and File → Check for Updates… check now reads /.well-known/version.txt (renamed from version), which had never been deployed to macfolders.com and made every check fail.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.4

An embedded terminal PRO: a colored, resizable shell below a pane's file list, without leaving the app.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • The green terminal icon on a pane header, Control-click, or Go → Show Embedded Terminal PRO (⌃⌘T) opens an interactive shell in that pane, below the file list — a colored, in-app terminal alongside the existing Open Terminal, which still opens Terminal.app.
  • Drag the bar above it to resize; each pane remembers its own terminal height and whether it is open, independently for left and right.
  • Runs your default shell in the pane's current folder. Unavailable inside a zip/tar archive or a remote connection.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.3

The Files menu is renamed to Items, and the File menu gains a Check for Updates… command.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • The Files menu is renamed to Items, matching its file and folder commands more clearly; Help and the Shortcut Guide are updated to match.
  • File → Check for Updates… checks macfolders.com right away and reports whether you are up to date, instead of waiting for the periodic background check.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.2

Toolbar buttons are grouped into capsules, and Help / Shortcut Guide now document Connect to Server (FTP/SFTP PRO).

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • The toolbar groups related buttons in capsules with dividers, instead of one continuous row.
  • Help and the Shortcut Guide now describe Go → Connect to Server… (⌘K) and Go → Manage Connections…, which were missing since FTP/SFTP PRO shipped in 1.6.
  • The Features and Docs pages on this site also gained a dedicated FTP/SFTP PRO entry.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6.1

The app checks macfolders.com for a newer release and shows Update available when one is ready.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • On startup, and every few hours while it is open, MacFolders reads /.well-known/version.txt on this site and compares it with the running version.
  • When the site lists a higher version, an Update available badge appears on the status bar above the function keys.
  • Click the badge to open this Releases page in your browser and download the new zip.
  • Failed checks stay silent and retry later. Help → About also describes the check and links to macfolders.com.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.6

FTP and SFTP PRO support (new, beta): connect to a server and work with a remote folder like a local one.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Go → Connect to Server… (⌘K) opens an FTP or SFTP PRO connection, with an option to save it; Go → Manage Connections… lists, edits, and reconnects saved connections.
  • A connected pane browses, uploads, downloads, renames, deletes, and creates folders on the remote server the same way a local pane does — drag files between a local and a remote pane to transfer them.
  • SFTP PRO supports password and ed25519 private-key authentication (passphrase-protected keys included); FTP supports password authentication.
  • Saved passwords and key passphrases are stored in the macOS Keychain, never written to disk in plain text. SFTP PRO host keys are pinned the first time you connect and rejected if they later change.
  • Compare, Find, and archive browsing stay local-only for now; those actions are disabled on a remote pane.
  • This is a new feature area and has not yet had extensive real-world testing — please report anything that looks wrong.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.5

Double-clicking the title bar or the empty space next to the logo no longer changes a pane’s folder.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Only a double-click on a file list row (or a Find result) opens or enters an item.
  • Double-click a folder, archive, or .. in the list still enters it; double-click a file still opens it.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.4

Rename a file or folder in the list, like Finder: click the selected name, or press F2.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Click the name of a selected file or folder to edit it in place. Return saves; Esc cancels.
  • F2, ⌃N, the toolbar Rename button, and Control-click → Rename use the same in-list edit.
  • For files, the name is selected and the extension is left as-is. Double-click still opens or enters.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.3

Copy and Move toolbar icons point toward the Destination pane and flip when Source changes.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Copy uses a document-and-arrow icon that points the same way as Move.
  • Both icons flip when you Flip Source or click the other pane.
  • Help, the Shortcut Guide, and Docs describe the directional icons.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.2

Panes refresh on their own when the folder changes on disk. The center toolbar logo is gone.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • A pane reloads when files appear, disappear, or change in that folder — Finder, Terminal, or another app.
  • Selection and scroll position stay put. Folder Compare is left alone so its colors are not wiped.
  • If the folder itself is removed, the pane goes up to the parent. View → Refresh (⌘R) still reloads every tab.
  • The square MacFolders mark is no longer in the middle of the toolbar.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.1

Finder drag and drop into a pane, plus Help and Shortcut Guide updates for Open in Finder, Terminal, and drops from Finder.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Drop files or folders from Finder onto a pane, the path bar, or empty list space, then choose Copy or Move.
  • Drops into a ZIP add items; tar archives and read-only volumes are refused. Existing names use the same overwrite dialog as Copy.
  • Help and the Shortcut Guide document Open in Finder (⌥⌘F), Open Terminal (⌥⌘T), and Finder drag and drop.
  • Requires macOS 14 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Not Mac App Store; see the first-launch note on the download page.

1.0

First public release of the native Mac app. Dual-pane Source and Destination workflow, with the toolbar, Help, and Shortcut Guide.

This zip is no longer offered for download.

  • Native dual-pane lists, folder tabs, path bar, bookmarks, Terminal, and Open in Finder.
  • Copy and move with progress, overwrite choices, and folder compare.
  • File Comparator (text and hex), Find in files, and Save File List to CSV.
  • Browse zip and tar like folders; writable ZIP; Pack and Extract.
  • Preview window, themes, and a customizable toolbar.
